Building Community Resilience

The Gratitude Fund supports young people help promote climate change resilience in their communities.

According to the study by Greenpeace East Asia, the City of Manila is sinking seven times faster than other places in the world. By 2050, 87% of the city’s land area and 1.54 million residents of Manila will be affected. As one of the biggest urban poor areas in the capital city of the Philippines, Baseco is highly vulnerable to climate change due to its location along the coast, which exposes it to rising sea levels and storm surges.

In order to enhance the community’s resilience and empower its residents, a training workshop on climate change and disaster risk reduction will be conducted. As an output, Youth for Better Baseco hopes to develop a community-based disaster risk reduction toolkit and communication materials to be strategically disseminated and shared with the different community stakeholders in the barangay, including Sangguniang Kabataan officials (the elected local youth council), community organizations, churches, and schools. This project also aims to help the local government unit in crafting a five-year action plan for effective community-based initiatives addressing disasters and climate change.
